Hello friends! Welcome to week 9 of your EL Useful English Podcast. We are  halfway through November now and time is flying by! I’m currently in Detroit 底特律, Michigan 密歇根州, which is located in the midwestern part of America. I’m here to visit my mother and her family. I’ll be spending some quality time with them for the next few weeks. I’m pretty excited to be spending Thanksgiving with my family this year. Have you guys been thinking about trying to do a Thanksgiving style dinner? Getting together with friends and family for a nice meal while giving thanks for what you’re all grateful for can be a wonderful experience. I hope you all get the chance to try a Thanksgiving dinner at some point if you haven’t yet.

Alright, shifting the focus onto today’s podcast— today we are going to break down a popular form of humor in the west. I’ll also be sharing some funny slang 俚语 references. And teaching you some lessons… about learning lessons… Let’s get started!

Well that’s reassuring…好让人放心啊......

If you’ve watched American television or talked to a westerner, I’m sure you’re at least a little familiar with one of America’s favorite forms of humor— sarcasm. We use sarcasm to say one thing when we actually mean the exact opposite. So when Mitchell tells Cameron, well that’s reassuring, he is really saying that it isn’t reassuring at all. When you listen to the podcast, I want you to pay attention to how I say the phrase and how I put the emphasis on “that’s”.

When I am using sarcasm, I emphasis certain words to infer a darker meaning. If I say, “well, that’s reassuring,” without being sarcastic, my voice will naturally rise. Sounding more excited.

I just read something online that says, “the first 5 days after the weekend are  the hardest.” Hm…that’s reassuring..

如果你看过美国电视或与西方人谈过话，我相信你至少对美国人最喜欢的一种幽默形式很熟悉-讽刺手法。 我们经常用讽刺来表达一个恰恰相反的情况。 因此，当Mitchell告诉Cameron时，“那”是令人放心的，他实际上是在说这根本不让人放心。 当你收听播客时，我希望你注意我如何说出这句话以及我如何强调这一点。

Here’s another example: It’s Friday night. A bunch of your friends are going out to have drinks and go dancing. They invite you to come with them but you tell them that you’re going to stay home and read. One of your friends says, “Wow, that sounds really exciting.” Can you sense the sarcasm?

We could spend a lot of time talking about sarcasm and humor in America but for the sake of time, I’m going to move onto our next phrase. However, if you want to learn more about the art of sarcasm, let me know and we can discuss it more in the future!

Keep it real 做你自己

In a rather funny scene in Modern Family we see that Phil tries to intimidate the boy his daughter brings to their home. However, Phil takes it a little too far. He tries to be the overly cool, but stern dad but just ends up embarrassing himself. He tells his daughter and her friend to “keep it real”. In America today this is used more as a slang term. It means to stay true to oneself, to be honest, and to resist the temptation to be someone you are not. Keep it real. This phrase is known for a rather cool thing to say among the younger generations… so when Phil says it… its just funny. Not very cool.

Here’s an example, in high school there’s a lot of pressure to act a certain way or dress a certain way. But I say, keep it real and be yourself.

You’ve learned your lesson 你已经吸取了教训

To learn your lesson means to learn not to do something through a somewhat painful experience. Usually it is something that someone was warned against or should have known not to do. Let’s say you waited until the night before to study for a big test. Your friends kept telling you to make time to study through out the week just in case something happens the night before your test. Well, the night before your test, you sit down to study and your computer isn’t working. The material you need to study is on your computer but you can’t access it. You say to yourself, “well, I guess I’ve learned my lesson.”
